Sustainability
The basic early stage masterplanning at Queenborough and Rushenden has already
started to address the four key areas set out in the current Government strategy for
sustainability: A Better Quality of Life, a Strategy for Sustainable Development in the UK.
These are:
? social progress which recognises the needs of everyone;
? effective protection of the environment;
? the prudent use of natural resources; and
? maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth and employment.
This is essentially a regeneration project aiming to build on the best of the human, built, and environmental resources of the site, but taking advantage of substantial change and investment over time to redress years of decline and produce new communities which set a new bench-mark in terms of sustainability. This produces interesting and difficult challenges because new communities which have no roots on the island need to be integrated with the existing population, to the advantage of both populations. The aim must be to regenerate existing industries and skills whilst introducing new skills, attitudes, and investment to produce a truly balanced overall development which will regenerate not only the immediate sites under consideration, but also the rest of the island.
